Lakshman’s career has covered a wide range of practice areas in India: commercial litigation, international arbitration, corporate law-private equity investment and M&A, commercial contracts and real estate.
While at law firms in India, Lakshman advised foreign investors on Indian foreign direct investment regulations and investment structuring, and on company law in general. Many of his clients were Singaporean and American investors, both corporate entities and funds, who sought to invest in and do business in India.
A former partner at a prominent full-service Indian law firm, Lakshman also worked in-house as General Counsel of an Indian-American business entity engaged in multiple business sectors before moving to Singapore.
Lakshman graduated from the National Law School of India University, Bangalore, India with a BA, LLB (Hons) degree. He also has an LLM in business law from the National University of Singapore.
Work Highlights
Corporate and Commercial Transactions:
- Advised an Indian corporate group engaged in the solar power industry on power projects developed for various state governments in India, and in Africa and Central America, and worked as their primary legal advisor on all business aspects for some years.
- Advised the above-mentioned group on (a) a US $ 3 million investment in it by an American fund, and (b) a series of complex transactions relating to an investment in it by an American strategic investor.
- Advised a large Indian data-centre service provider on a US$ 10 million investment from a US-based asset management firm.
- Part of a team advising (a) a sovereign wealth and asset investment fund with a multi-billion-dollar asset base and (b) a large Singaporean developer, in their investments in and disinvestments from several high-value real estate projects in India.
- Advised an American commercial real estate group in its negotiations with an Indian government authority to restructure its multi-million-dollar investment in a special economic zone in south India.
- Advised a speciality Indian hospital on a staggered investment of US$ 15 million by high net worth value investors and an investment fund.
- Advised a leading Indian online gaming services provider on legal aspects of conducting online card games with stakes, at that time at a nascent stage in India, with specific reference to laws of different states of India.
- Assisted a large Indian sugar manufacturing company in its acquisition of a sugar processing business and factory.
- Advised a multi-national IT services provider’s regional business units in India, the Middle East and Africa on a range of commercial and corporate issues.
Disputes:
- Represented a reputed Indian automotive manufacturer in a commercial arbitration in India, in a dispute with a Japanese supplier.
- Regularly advised large public-sector Indian banking corporations on commercial litigation matters.
- Advised a multi-national agri-business company in a regulatory dispute with the office of the (Indian) Registrar of Companies.
