Wei Hong has a unique blend of experience in law and insurance.

 

Wei Hong graduated from the National University of Singapore with an LLB (Hons) degree in 2006 and was admitted to the Singapore Bar in 2007. He then spent the next 10 years in several of the largest leading law firms in Singapore, honing his skills as a dispute resolution lawyer with a specialist focus on Construction.

 

In this capacity, he has acted for many of the different stakeholders in the construction industry, including: –

  • statutory boards, large MNCs and SMEs (as developers);
  • engineers, architects, quantity surveyors, project engineers and other specialists (as consultants);
  • main, sub and specialist contractors of various trades from earthworks to ACMV, pipeworks and fireproofing; and
  • the ultimate owners of the completed work

 

In 2017, Wei Hong left the legal industry to join one of the world’s largest insurance broking firms as a claims broker handling General Insurance (non-marine) and Financial Lines claims.

 

Leveraging on his legal expertise, Wei Hong focused on large and complex claims for various lines of insurance like Cyber, Professional Indemnity, Bankers Blanket Bonds and Trade Credit. By the time he left in end 2021, he was a regional head overseeing 6 countries in South-East Asia.

 

Wei Hong is an active community leader and volunteer, and holds positions in various grassroots organisations. He is also currently the Branch Chairman of PAP Sengkang East.

KEY AREAS OF PRACTICE

  • Acted as counsel for a High Court dispute involving the fitness of purpose of a specially designed and constructed water storage tank for a prominent feature in a Singaporean casino
  • Assisted as counsel for a matter where we successfully argued for a stay of Court proceedings in favour of arbitration, even though the party we represented was not a part of the arbitration agreement
  • Advising and representing a subsidiary of a local list co in disputes where multiple actions were launched simultaneously in arbitration, litigation and adjudication.
  • Acting for the land development arm of a local list co in managing multiple disputes for claims relating to alleged defects in a luxury condominium development in a landed enclave in Singapore, with total claims amounting to more than SGD$15m
  • Representing a Korean earthworks specialist sub-contractor against a joint-venture company in an arbitration for unpaid claims amounting to more than $10million
  • Acting as counsel for a claim against a statutory board and its contractors for damage to a property arising out of nearby tunnelling works for the Circle Line and KPE.
  • Acting as one of the counsels for a Hong Kong company against a Singapore GLC in the Court of Appeal in a landmark case on the assessment of damages arising from a breach of contract due to misrepresentation, where we successfully reduced the damages awarded from more than $8m to around $350,000

Experience in this area was from his role as an Insurance Claims broker, negotiating and managing claims on behalf of insureds against insurers, and include the following:

  • Acting for a local bank for claims on their Bankers’ Blanket Bond policy in relation to several distinct matters. In one, the bank was making a claim for SGD$100m arising out of trade financing losses.
  • Assisting a research institution for losses arising out of a cyber attack by dedicated state actors
  • Assisting and advising a hospital for alleged medical malpractice arising out of misdiagnosis, where more than 200 patients were affected
  • Acting and advising a commodities trader for claims on trade credit policies against insurers in 3 different jurisdictions, for claims amounting to an 8 figure sum.
  • Acting and advising the owners of a luxury boutique hotel chain in their claims against insurers (for an 8 figure sum) for losses sustained due to Covid-19
  • Acting for a consultant firm for an incident where a section of an expressway under construction collapsed (leading to a death and multiple injuries), due to the alleged under-designing of the engineering elements. Amount involved was an 8 figure sum
  • Acting for a British firm carrying out construction of bridge in Thailand where allegations were raised about under-design
